There are 14 hiking trails in Nyungwe Forest National Park - traversing over 130 kilometers of pathways through the forest, where you can explore the deeper natural wonders of this ancient forest by foot. The hiking trails range from one to eight hours in time with one trail taking unto 4 days, allowing for varied fitness conditions. 

CHOOSE YOUR HIKING TRAIL IN NYUNGWE

IGISHIGISHIGI TRAIL 

Distance : 2.4km
Duration : 5 hours
Level of difficulty : Moderate


The most famous trail from Uwinka reception area of the park, as it includes the canopy forest walkway. This is a featured attraction in Nyungwe forest national park. 

ISUMO WATERFALL TRAIL 

Distance : 10.6 km
Duration : 4 hours
Level of difficulty : Moderate

This trail will take you through a tea plantation and then through patches of forest to the waterfall, where you can view many species of monkeys, and often you will view the Ruwenzori Turaco bird. 

 

THE SOURCE OF THE NILE TRAIL 

Distance : Short
Duration : 1.5 hours
Level of difficulty : Easy

The source of Nile is also argued to be found in Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi and here you will hike to the known Rwandan Source of the Nile that was discovered in 2006 where it was determined that the head waters of the Rukarara River was the source of the Nile in Nyungwe Forest. Many Ugandans do not agree with this. 

ISUMO WATERFALL TRAIL 

NGABWE TRAIL 

Distance : 4.7 km
Duration : 3 hours
Level of difficulty : Moderate


It can also be extended to be 8 hours and would then include the Kitabi tea plantation. Carrying a packed lunch is recommended to eat at the picnic site that offers some good views of the forest. The trail offers viewing of the colobus monkeys, L’Hoest silver monkeys, chimpanzees as well as the Mangabey.  

BIGUGU TRAIL 

Distance : 7 km
Duration : 6 hours
Level of difficulty : Difficult

Elevation : 2950m

Very steep and slippery at times. An excellent trail for the birders where one can see the red collared mountain babbler. along with the fantastic wild flowers including the orchids and the giant lobelias. 

KAMIRANZOVU MARSH TRAIL 

Distance : 6 km
Duration : 3 hours
Level of difficulty : Moderate

This trail is inside of the caldera like depression and it’s a large swamp which forms a vital watershed within the park. Along this trail, you will find lots orchids in the rainy season and this season starts in October to November and then April and May each year. This trail is also rich in botanical life and is good for swamp associated birds like the Grauer’s Rush warber. 

THE RUKUZI TRAIL 

Distance : 9 km
Duration : 5 hours
Level of difficulty : Difficult

This trail includes hiking to see the chimpanzees of Nyungwe Forest and takes in the stunning vistas for the hikers to view along the way. If you do not see the chimps, the scenery along the hike is fantastic. 

KARAMBA BIRDING TRAIL 

Distance : 4 km
Duration : Short & relaxed
Level of difficulty : Easy

Much of this hike is a flat and open area of the forest. This was also an area where gold mining was done and later on, it became a quarry for road building material and then aN army camp. This is the least muddy trail within Nyungwe Forest and you will be able to spot some of the Orchids, the giant tree ferns as well as the Dent’s Monkey’s that are so rare to find. 

MUZIMU TRAIL 

Distance : 5.2 km
Duration : 3.5 hours
Level of difficulty : Moderate

The trail passes through shrubs, vegetation, a variety of wild flowers along with sightings of non forest birds. Offering 360 degrees view of the park as well as Lake Kivu in the far distance. Also on a clear day, you can view the Virunga Volcanoes that tower over Rwanda, 

IMBARAGA TRAIL 

Distance : 10 km
Duration : 6 hours
Level of difficulty : Difficult


Starting at Uwinka reception center, ‘Imbaraga’ means ‘strength’. The trail includes visiting four different waterfalls with a chance to view the chimpanzees.   

 

IREBERO TRAIL 

Distance : 3.4 km
Duration : 3 hours
Level of difficulty : Moderate

‘Irebero’ also means ‘view point’ offering for great scenic views from a high altitude where one can see Rwanda’s borders and view Lake Kivu. Looping around the two highest peaks that are found in Nyungwe forest. 

UMUGOTE TRAIL 

Distance : 3.6 km
Duration : 3 hours
Level of difficulty : Moderate

This trail was named after Syzygium tree that are commonly found along this trail. The hike takes you up the side of the mountain where you will have great views of the forest, taking you through the valley to see the forest’s rich biodiversity. On a clear day, you will view the mountains of Burundi. 

UMUYOVE TRAIL 

Distance : 5.5 km
Duration : 3.5 hours
Level of difficulty : Easy

This is one of the famous hikes with in the park and is relatively short and filled with fantastic views of the waterfalls and the orchids along with many other wild flowers for you to enjoy the hike. The Umuyove also means Mahogany as you will see these trees line the trail which makes it a more enjoyable hike. You will also have the opportunity to see many bird species and primates. 

ISUMO WATERFALL TRAIL 

Distance : 42 km
Duration : 3 - 4 Days
Level of difficulty : Difficult & for experienced hikers

This is also the longest hiking trail in Nyungwe Forest, that takes you along the ridge of the forest that separates the river basins which flows into the Nile and on the other side of the ridge into the river basin of the Congo. This is also for the experienced hikers and includes camping in the forest as you make the 42km trek through the ridge of the forest. Not to be confused with the popular Congo Nile Trail that runs alongside Lake Kivu in western Uganda.
