Inspired Journeys was founded by a group of people whom believed in the beauty of a place, deep in the heart of Africa, known today as Virunga National Park in the DRC. Our 'Journey' was 'Inspired' by this majestic & wonderful land, its' people & it's inhabitants - as seen in the Netflix movie 'VIRUNGA'. It is this journeys that motivated us to make it possible for travellers to be able to gain access to areas that were either forgotten after troubled times, or previously inaccessible.

Virunga National Park is a UNESCO world heritage site, and the oldest National Park in Africa. Located in the east of the DRC, bordering with Uganda and Rwanda, it is the continents' most biologically diverse and protected area, under the 'Virunga Alliance' programme. It is protected by a dedicated team of 600 park rangers, whom are recruited locally and undergo intensive training to safeguard the parks' exceptional wildlife, including the last of the world's critically endangered Mountain Gorillas. A visit to Virunga will leave travellers feeling touched by it's heartwarming and valiant story, and changed by the humility of the people and the opportunity to witness some unique highlights only found in Virunga National Park.

EXPERIENCE THE BEATING HEART OF AFRICA & IT'S HOT LAVA LAKE

The Gorillas might be the stars of Virunga, but the NYIRAGONGO is the beating heart. It is one of the first great sightings upon entering Goma. As the mountain looms ominously over the city it has already engorged various times, of which the scars are still visible from its latest explosion in 2002. For travellers wishing to sleep on the rim of the world’s largest lava lake, it is a 5 hour hike to the summit, depending on the fitness level of the group. Upon arrival, a radiating heat of the lava lake in the crater welcomes enthusiastic adventurers. The real spectacle starts at night when the light starts to dim and the orange glow of the lava truly comes alive.

SENKWEKWE MOUNTAIN GORILLA ORPHANAGE

A trip to Virunga National Park would not be complete without visiting the world's only Mountain gorilla sanctuary. Named in honour of one of the park's legendary rangers and also the silverback who was murdered in the 2007 gorilla massacre. Here you will have the possibility of meeting the ranger André Bauma from the Oscar nominated documentary ‘Virunga.' Currently, there are 4 rescued orphans in the centre, that can be watched from a number of viewing platforms, while they play around in their enclosure. Note that the Senkwekwe centre closes at 16h00.
